Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price was recalled on Monday in a sharp rebuke of her progressive criminal justice policies. Price, backed by George Soros, faced widespread criticism for decisions perceived as soft on crime, including dropping charges in high-profile cases.
Price’s tenure as DA coincided with a surge in crime, including a nearly 10% increase in violent incidents and widespread smash-and-grab robberies that forced many businesses to close. Her handling of the Jasper Wu case, where she removed special circumstances charges against gang members who killed the toddler, drew particular outrage.
IT'S OFFICIAL: WE HAVE RECALLED @AlamedaCountyDA Pamela Price.
Thank you to the volunteers, voters and supporters. Price has harmed too many in our community. We also request the Board of Supervisors quickly act to stop Pamela's retaliation in the office.https://t.co/dk2Rgk8Wg1— Recall_Pamela_Price (@Recall_Price) November 9, 2024

The recall reflects growing dissatisfaction with lenient crime policies. Proposition 36, a measure to increase penalties for theft and drug trafficking, passed with 71% support statewide, highlighting a shift toward stricter approaches to law enforcement.
Oakland residents were vocal in their opposition to Price’s leadership. At a public safety meeting last year, attendees expressed anger over the rising crime rate. Price defended her policies, stating, “All counties across the state have been asked to decriminalize young people, and so our county has adopted that as a policy.”
For the first time in city history, Oakland voters have recalled their mayor, Sheng Thao.

Price’s removal is part of a larger political shift in California, where frustration over crime has driven voters toward tougher measures. Forty percent of Californians voted for President Donald Trump in 2024, signaling a rejection of progressive policies on crime and public safety.
The recall serves as a warning to other officials pursuing similar reforms, as voters increasingly demand accountability for crime-related policies.

In her first press conference since voters booted her from office last week, @AlamedaCountyDA Pamela Price "refused to answer questions about the outcome of the recall against her and gave no timeline for when she may concede or leave office." https://t.co/cujL3tLagc
