Biden’s ‘Weekly’ Lunch Meetings with Harris Have Dwindled to Two All Year

The relationship between Joe Biden and Kamala Harris seems to be cooling amid the uncertainty the Democratic Party faces in this year’s upcoming midterm elections. When Biden assumed office he said he would have lunch with the vice president weekly. The two have reportedly met for lunch only two times this year.

When he was serving as vice president, Biden used his weekly meetings with Barack Obama seriously. The meal served as an important business meeting set out on the White House calendar to work on the administration’s agenda.

Biden then said he “made the same deal” with Harris just after he took office. He told reporters that meant she had “drop-in privileges” at the Oval Office in addition to “lunch alone once a week.” Biden said that would be “the deal when we’re both in-country,” and said at the time that because of COVID he would “see her all the time.”

By this time last year, the president’s public schedule shows they had 12 of those private lunch get-togethers. They have only done so twice in all of 2022.

One meal was shared on February 8, as Biden was in the process of deciding who to nominate to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. The other lunch meeting occurred March 30, soon after Biden returned from Europe to drum up support for Ukraine in its defense of the Russian invasion.

Deputy White House Press Secretary Chris Meagher said that despite the reduced number of in-person meetings, the president and vice president are “in constant touch with each other.” He said Biden “relies on her counsel, partnership, and friendship.”

According to an excerpt from a new book by New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alex Burns, the weekly lunches became less regular after it was apparent they “lacked a real depth of personal and political intimacy.”

The book also indicates Joe’s wife was not thrilled with the choice of Harris as running mate. Jill Biden reportedly asked, “Why do we have to choose the one who attacked Joe?”

Brit Hume gave poor Joe the benefit of the doubt in a tweet he posted Thursday when it comes to sitting down for a meal with Kamala.
