President Xi Jinping recently stressed the importance of promoting high-quality development in China’s tourism sector, as the country faces new opportunities and challenges in the post-pandemic era. Xi’s remarks come as China seeks to bolster its struggling economy and maintain its position as a leading tourism destination.
In a meeting on the development of the tourism sector held in Beijing, Xi urged all regions and departments to strengthen their sense of responsibility and coordinate efforts to ensure the steady and sustainable growth of the industry. He emphasized the need to implement the new development philosophy, enhance quality and efficiency, and pursue integrated development.
“To improve the modern tourism industry and speed up building China into a leading tourism nation, it is a must, under the guidance of the Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, to fully and faithfully implement the new development philosophy on all fronts,” Xi said.
China has become the world’s biggest domestic tourism market and a main destination for international travelers. However, the country’s economy has been grappling with the effects of strict COVID-19 lockdowns, a loss of foreign investment, and a struggling real estate market.
The meeting called for efforts to protect cultural heritage and ecological resources, improve supply and service quality, and deepen international tourism exchanges and cooperation.
