Congress Certifies Electoral College, Securing Donald Trump’s Second Term

Today, Congress will finalize the 2024 presidential election results, officially confirming the once and future president, Donald Trump, as the nation’s leader. This comes four years after Trump “lost” the 2020 election, a result many continue to question due to allegations of irregularities.

Trump secured a commanding 312-226 Electoral College victory over Vice President Kamala Harris. The certification, a constitutionally mandated step, will be overseen by Harris herself in her role as president of the Senate.

During the session, sealed electoral results from all 50 states will be opened and read aloud in alphabetical order by designated tellers. While members of Congress have the ability to challenge the results, these objections must be supported by one-fifth of both chambers to be considered. No such objections are expected during this process.

This certification stands in stark contrast to January 6, 2021, when a similar session was overshadowed by controversy and unrest. At that time, former Vice President Mike Pence certified Joe Biden’s victory, despite objections and calls for further scrutiny of the election.

With Republicans now in control of both the House and Senate, Trump’s return to the presidency marks a major shift in the nation’s political landscape. His administration is expected to focus heavily on themes of election reform and national renewal.

Following today’s certification, Trump will prepare for his swearing-in ceremony on January 20, when he officially begins his second term as president.
