Conyers Chemical Plant Fire Sparks Evacuations And Safety Concerns

A chemical plant fire in Conyers, Georgia, led to mass evacuations and road closures on Sunday as toxic smoke filled the air, forcing local officials to take urgent action. The fire occurred at the BioLab plant, which produces pool and spa chemicals, igniting early in the morning and continuing to burn for several hours.

Firefighters battled the blaze despite knowing that using water would cause the chemicals to react further. The plant’s sprinkler system, designed to control fires, inadvertently fueled the reaction, releasing hazardous fumes. No injuries were reported, but the situation prompted authorities to order the evacuation of approximately 17,000 residents.

In addition to the evacuation, a portion of Interstate 20 was closed as smoke spread into nearby communities. Officials in surrounding counties, including Newton and DeKalb, advised residents to shelter in place and turn off air conditioners to avoid inhaling harmful chemicals.

This fire marks the third major incident at the BioLab facility since 2004, leading to increased concern among local residents about the plant’s continued operations. In response to these concerns, many are calling for stronger safety measures and a review of the plant’s impact on the community.

As of Monday morning, some residents were allowed to return home, but officials continue to monitor air quality and assess the damage caused by the fire.
