GOP Bill To Deport Criminal Immigrants Passes Despite Democratic Opposition

A bill to deport illegal immigrants convicted of sex crimes passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support, though 158 Democrats voted against it. The Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act, introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), passed with 266 votes, including support from 51 Democrats.

The legislation targets individuals in the U.S. illegally who are convicted of sexual offenses, domestic violence, or related charges. Mace defended the measure, stating it was essential for public safety, but most Democrats opposed it, with Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) calling it a partisan ploy to stoke fear.

Mace’s history complicates her advocacy for the bill. Who has distanced herself from Trump, she reportedly sought attention during the January 6 protests by suggesting she confront protesters for media coverage. Despite having attacked Trump for that day, Mace later endorsed him, raising skepticism about her motivations.

Democrats who supported the bill included Reps. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) and Jared Moskowitz (D-FL), signaling bipartisan concern about border-related crimes. Slotkin, a Senate candidate, emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety over partisan politics.

This legislation follows other GOP efforts to address crimes tied to illegal immigration, including the Laken Riley Act, which targeted violent offenders entering the country illegally.
