Republicans have ramped up calls for President Joe Biden to resign following his announcement to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. Biden’s decision, shared in a post on X, included his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination. This has led GOP leaders to question Biden’s ability to continue serving as President.
“If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President,” Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana stated on X. “He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough.”
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), the GOP’s vice-presidential nominee, raised similar concerns. “Not running for reelection would be a clear admission that President Trump was right all along about Biden not being mentally fit enough to serve as Commander-in-Chief,” Vance posted.
Several other Republican senators voiced their agreement. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) tweeted, “Then RESIGN your office. If you can’t run a mere political campaign, you can’t be President.” Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) added, “Joe Biden was never mentally fit to be President. I join my colleagues in demanding that President Biden resign immediately.”
House Republicans also echoed these calls for resignation. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) suggested using the 25th Amendment if Biden does not step down voluntarily. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) insisted, “If Biden can’t run for office, he should resign. Immediately.”
These calls reflect ongoing Republican concerns about Biden’s cognitive abilities and their belief that he should step down to ensure effective governance. The GOP’s push for resignation underscores their desire for a change in leadership to address the nation’s challenges.
