Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-WY) is demanding transparency in how the Department of Education spends its billions, arguing that taxpayer money is being wasted on bureaucracy instead of benefiting students. During a recent interview, she outlined how federal funding is misallocated to consultants and political networks while classrooms remain underfunded.
She revealed that out of the department’s $280 billion budget, less than 25% is used for direct education efforts. The majority, she said, is funneled through various bureaucratic layers, where it ends up in the hands of consultants and organizations with political ties.

“It’s a cycle of waste,” Hageman said. “Money moves from one bureaucratic pocket to another, benefiting consultants who, in turn, donate back to Democrats.”
She praised the Department of Government Oversight and Efficiency (DOGE) for investigating these abuses and called for its findings to be used to cut unnecessary programs.
“DOGE can’t make budget cuts, but it can provide the information we need to do it,” she explained. “We need a full accounting of where every dollar is going so that we can put an end to this.”
Hageman, who has been outspoken about federal waste since taking office, argued that Congress must take responsibility for fixing the system. She said lawmakers should use DOGE’s reports to push through major budget reductions and stop federal funds from being used as a political tool.
With growing concerns over government accountability, her focus on the Department of Education’s spending practices could drive further efforts to overhaul the way taxpayer money is managed in Washington.
