Joe Biden’s “virtual embassy” in Iran shared a social media message from Vice President Kamala Harris that has been described as an “insult to all Americans.” The US had not had a formal diplomatic presence or physical embassy in Iran since the hostage crisis in 1979 when Iranian revolutionaries captured the American embassy.
The virtual Iran embassy says it is the “primary official resource” for Iranian people to get American policies and cultural information. It is intended to serve as a “bridge” between the two nations since Iran has no physical US embassy.
Last Wednesday, the virtual embassy made a post to its social media accounts quoting Harris. The post is a picture of Harris with her quote displayed in Farsi. In English, the post says that the “truth” is that America has segregation, xenophobia, antisemitism, Islamophobia, anti-LGBT, and transphobia. It adds that “wherever injustice is dealt with, there is activity ahead.”
Last May, the quote came from Harris’s remarks to commemorate Biden’s signing of the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act. The State Department also used the exact quote on its social media accounts last month to mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Mike Pompeo, who served as Secretary of State during the Trump Administration, said that Harris’s suggestion of moral equivalence between the Tehran regime’s ambition to destroy Israel with the American principle of equal protection of the law is “dangerous and ungrounded in reality.” Pompeo added that “Americans are better than this.”
Newt Gingrinch, a former Republican Speaker of the House, asked “what level of hating America” is necessary for the Vice President to attack her nation.
Ellie Cohanim with the Independent Women’s Forum said that the post on an official government account is “appalling.” She said that the message is an insult to all Americans and is harmful to Iranian people who are persecuted for being gay or Jewish.
Mariam Memarsadeghi, an Iranian-American activist, described the post as a reminder of the Biden Administration’s insulting policy of minimizing the oppression of the Iranian regime and suggesting that American cultural life is somehow equivalent to the suffering imposed by Tehran on its citizens.
The Biden Administration’s constant bashing of America internationally will surely not help as the US continues its efforts to stabilize Eastern Europe against Russian and Chinese aggression with lukewarm assistance from many NATO allies.
