Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas survived an unusual impeachment effort led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) with the help of eight Republicans who sided with Democrats. Mayorkas has been under increasing pressure to resign or face impeachment as the crisis at the southern border has escalated during President Joe Biden’s term.
Taylor-Greene took a novel approach to the impeachment process by proposing the impeachment go straight to a vote. Had the impeachment resolution passed the House, the it would have gone directly to the Senate. The ordinary process for impeachment involves hearings and committee discussions.
Several of the eight Republicans that flipped on the party face re-election battles in 2024. Among three California Republicans, John Duarte (R-CA) faces the most difficult challenge. Duarte beat out former State Rep. Adam Gray (D-CA) by just 600 votes in 2022. California’s rural regions traditionally lean Republican but have become increasingly purple or blue over the last decade. Darrel Issa (R-CA) and Tom McClintock (R-CA) sided with Duarte to keep Mayorkas in place.
Other Republicans who crossed over to save Mayorkas include Cliff Bentz (R-OR), Mike Turner (R-OH), Patrick McHenry (R-NC), Virginia Foxx (R-NC), and Ken Buck (R-CO). McHenry held the speaker pro tempore position following the removal of Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as speaker before Republicans united behind Mike Johnson (R-LA).
Shame on the 8 Republicans who voted with Democrats to kill my articles of impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas.

Mayorkas has borne the brunt of criticism over the Biden administration’s border policies. Since Biden took office in 2020, Customs and Border Patrol has reported unprecedented numbers of immigrants crossing legally and illegally into the U.S. Current policies allow anyone to enter on a claim of asylum. Immigrants are then given a court hearing to have their asylum claims heard. Immigration courts are overwhelmed with the number of cases pending and currently have a backlog of cases nearing 3 million.
Biden’s open border policy has also resulted in a significant shift for Border Patrol agents who find themselves filling out paperwork rather than patrolling the border. Fewer agents has led to ever-increasing numbers of “gotaways,” illegal immigrants who evade detention. Rather than fund more Border Patrol agents, the administration has sought to increase the number of Internal Revenue Service investigators to target Americans who are not paying their taxes correctly.
Biden and his allies continue to paint a rosy picture of the immigration crisis that is popular with liberal Democrats while ignoring the realities of increased drug trafficking and rising sex trafficking. While mainstay drugs like heroin and methamphetamine continue to cross into the U.S., it is the deadly drug fentanyl that is creating the greatest problems. Drug overdose deaths are rapidly climbing in both urban and rural parts of the country due to the prevalence of fentanyl.
Sanctuary cities such as New York City have experienced an explosion in the number of immigrants who are dependent on food, housing, and medical care, but are also excluded from being able to work. Entire neighborhoods in New York City are now operating as open-air brothels in broad daylight fueled primarily by immigrants from South and Latin American countries.
