McCarthy Calls For Alejandro Mayorkas To Resign, Threatens Impeachment

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has called for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to resign from his position — declaring him a threat to U.S. sovereignty and threatening that House Republicans would consider starting impeachment proceedings if Mayorkas resists.

McCarthy, who expects to be the next Speaker of the House when Republicans retake the chamber in January, made the announcement in a press conference held near the U.S.-Mexico border.

During his speech, he argued that under Mayorkas’ leadership, the U.S. has seen “the greatest wave of illegal immigration in recorded history, with an estimated 5.5 million border encounters since Biden took office in February 2021.”

“Our country may never recover from Secretary Mayorkas’s dereliction of duty,” McCarthy added. “This is why, today, I am calling on the Secretary to resign. He cannot and must not remain in that position.”

“If Secretary Mayorkas does not resign, House Republicans will investigate every order, every action, and every failure will determine whether we can begin [an] impeachment inquiry,” he continued.

The California congressman also vowed that House Republicans would hold hearings to investigate Mayorkas’ actions on the southern border as DHS chief, and ensure that Democrats can no longer avoid taking responsibility for the border crisis.

“We will hold our hearings at the border so the Democrats can no longer hide from the crisis they have created,” he said.

McCarthy then accused Mayorkas of empowering “cartels, human traffickers, and terrorist organizations all around the world” while ensuring that the U.S. will experience a “tsunami” of illegal immigration thanks to the Biden administration’s refusal to appeal a federal court decision ending Title 42.

“Now let me be clear, those responsible for this disaster will be held accountable,” he stated. “I’ve spoken today again to Congressman Jim Jordan and James Comert, the future chair of the Oversight and Judiciary Committee.”

“They have my complete support to investigate the collapse of our border and the shutdown of [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] enforcement nationwide,” McCarthy added.

Since President Joe Biden took office, with the help of Mayorkas as head of DHS, the administration has released approximately 1.4 million illegal aliens into communities across the U.S. as part of Biden’s expansive catch-and-release operation.
