Ron Kim, a state assemblyman from Queens, has revealed that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) attempted to sway the results of his election during last June’s Democratic primary.
Kim, who represents the Flushing area, said foreign groups with ties to the CCP supported his opponent, Yi Andy Chen, in an effort to take control of his seat.
Kim shared his concerns with The New York Post, explaining that the CCP’s growing influence in local politics is alarming. “They were trying to steal the Flushing seat,” Kim said, describing the intricate web of influence. Kim’s claims come amid the recent arrest of Linda Sun, a former aide to Gov. Kathy Hochul, who has been charged with working as an unregistered CCP agent.
Sun and her husband face accusations of laundering millions in kickbacks through CCP-linked schemes, using the funds to purchase luxury properties and vehicles. In Kim’s race, his opponent Chen was backed by the American Chinese Commerce Association, which has close ties to the CCP.
Despite facing foreign interference, Kim won his primary but expressed concern that the CCP’s influence is becoming more pronounced. He said that while most of the Chinese community opposes the CCP, new organizations tied to the communist regime are attempting to gain a foothold in U.S. politics.
