Report Highlights Costs Of Crimes By Non-Detained Illegal Migrants

A report by Dr. John R. Lott based on U.S. Department of Justice data reveals that crimes committed by illegal migrants on the Non-Detained Docket (NDD) cost taxpayers over $166 billion. The analysis shows that the homicide rate among this group is 13 times higher than the U.S. average.

As of mid-2024, ICE reported to Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) that 662,566 illegal migrants with criminal histories were on the NDD. Of those, 435,719 have prior convictions in their home countries, while 226,847 face pending charges.

In 2023, crimes by individuals on the NDD included 14,944 homicides, 20,061 sexual assaults, 105,146 assaults, and 60,268 burglaries, larcenies, and robberies. Traffic offenses accounted for 126,343 incidents, according to the report.

The financial impact is immense, with homicides alone costing $153.8 billion of the $166.5 billion total. Lott noted that these figures likely underestimate the full costs, as the calculations assume only one crime per individual.

The report also acknowledges its limited scope, which excludes half of the migrants on the docket. This suggests the overall impact of these crimes could be far greater.

Lott’s findings have intensified debates over immigration policies that permit individuals with criminal records to remain free while awaiting legal proceedings.
