Russia’s foreign intelligence agency (SVR) has claimed that NATO is preparing to push Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy out of power through upcoming elections, alleging that Western leaders see him as an obstacle to negotiations with Moscow.
According to SVR, the West is planning to weaken Zelenskyy’s position by highlighting corruption within his administration. The allegations include the misuse of military funds and illicit arms sales. These claims, if promoted by NATO allies, could provide justification for pushing Zelenskyy aside.
Zelenskyy, whose term expired in May 2023, has remained in office by postponing elections under martial law. While the Ukrainian government has not confirmed any plans for new elections, the U.S. has increased pressure on Ukraine to set a date. U.S. Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg has publicly called for elections to be held, fueling speculation that Zelenskyy’s leadership is being questioned.
SVR’s claims align with reports that Washington and European governments are becoming frustrated with Zelenskyy’s resistance to peace talks. The agency alleges that NATO is now looking for ways to transition Ukraine’s leadership while maintaining its influence over the country.
Moscow suggests that Trump’s return to office may play a role in these developments. SVR claims NATO might prefer a leader who aligns with Trump’s foreign policy, though no specific candidates have been identified.
Kellogg is set to visit Kiev in the coming weeks following his expected participation in the Munich Security Conference. His discussions with Ukrainian officials could indicate whether Western leaders are serious about pushing for elections and a leadership change.
