Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is stepping up his state’s efforts to bus illegal immigrants crossing the border with Mexico to New York City.
Record numbers of illegal crossers are bypassing federal immigration law that require they be deported by making dubious claims for political asylum. The policies of Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security are resulting in a large majority of them being released into the U.S. without any real expectation they will return for a court date.
With as many as 5,000 illegals being released into his communities daily, Abbott has been sending them to Washington, D.C., and New York City, self-proclaimed “sanctuary cities.” Since August 5, Texas has sent more than 1,500 migrants to New York and around 7,400 to Washington on chartered buses.

Abbott named the border security project Operation Lone Star and launched it in March 2021. He said it is necessary to “fill the dangerous gaps left by the Biden Administration’s refusal to secure the border.”
In addition to sending illegals north, the Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas National Guard are working together to fight the flood of people, drugs, and weapons coming across the Rio Grande.
Operation Lone Star has apprehended more than 297,000 migrants who entered Texas illegally. The program has also reported more than 19,000 criminal arrests on state charges and has seen the seizure of more than 355 million potentially lethal doses of fentanyl.
In response to criticism of his order to transport migrants northward, Abbott has invited New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser, both Democrats, to come to Texas to tour the border region with him. Both mayors have turned him down.
Bowser has called on Biden’s Secretary of Defense to deploy National Guard troops to help her handle the increased number of migrants arriving in Washington. Adams has allocated millions in new spending to provide housing and services to the illegal aliens. Both have blamed Abbott for creating a “humanitarian crisis.”
Since assuming power, the Biden administration has seen approximately 5 million people from more than 150 nations enter the United States illegally. That total includes “gotaways,” the term used by the Border Patrol for illegals who evade detection and arrest when illegally entering the country.
