In the eyes of the White House, moderate Democrats are a thorn in their side. Despite Biden himself running his campaign as a moderate, his presidency has been as radical as it gets.
Months ago, Biden tried to take down the Senate filibuster. Yet, Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), along with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WZ), joined all 50 GOP senators in voting against this proposal.
Moderate Democrats also played a role in why the Build Back Better Act did not make it past the Senate. Back in December, Manchin came out and expressly declared he would not vote for the legislation. This, again, put him in the same boat as 50 Senate Republicans who also refused to support the legislation.
Biden doesn’t like when he doesn’t get his way. Rather than seeing his policies as the problem, he thinks real moderates in his party are the problem.
This explains why the Biden administration is reportedly working to oust Sinema from the Democrat Party entirely, according to National Review.
Various Attacks from the White House
Various unnamed individuals have spoken to the media, alleging the Biden administration has different problems with Sinema. Aside from her votes against certain parts of his agenda, even the issue of masking has been controversial.
A while back, White House aides became annoyed when Sinema questioned why she should wear a mask around Biden when she’d already taken the COVID-19 vaccine.
As all of this plays out, progressives in the Democrat Party are all too eager to primary Sinema in 2025 when she is up for re-election.
Last year, Biden was even publicly dismissive when Sinema was chased into a university bathroom by progressives who wanted her to back Biden’s Build Back Better agenda.
Problems with Sen. Manchin
Sinema and Manchin are the two moderate Democrats who have been most vocal in standing against parts of Biden’s agenda. After Manchin announced that he wouldn’t be voting for the Build Back Better Act, the White House openly accused him of betraying the Democrat Party.
Meanwhile, it’s actually against Democrats’ best interests to shun the moderates in their party. Manchin’s already received an invitation from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to come join the Republican Party.
This would formally tip the power balance in the Senate over to the GOP. If the Biden administration keeps going as it has been, its party is going to get smaller and weaker by the day.
