President-elect Donald Trump referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the “Governor” of the “Great State of Canada” in a Truth Social post. The playful remark comes as Trump pushes for tariffs aimed at addressing illegal drugs and trade imbalances.
“It was a pleasure to meet with Governor Justin Trudeau,” Trump wrote. “Our talks on trade and tariffs will yield spectacular results for all involved!”
During their Mar-a-Lago meeting, Trump emphasized the need for stronger action against illegal drugs entering the U.S. U.S. officials reported seizing 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border last year, compared to over 21,000 pounds at the Mexican border. Canadian officials maintain that linking their drug issues to Mexico’s is unfair.
Trudeau warned that new tariffs could increase costs for U.S. consumers, stating, “These measures won’t make life easier or more affordable for Americans.” Despite the disagreements, both leaders described the meeting as productive.
Canada’s U.S. ambassador, Kristen Hillman, highlighted the strength of the trade relationship, noting that 77% of Canadian exports go to the U.S. and $170 billion in energy products were sold to the U.S. last year. She stressed the need to view trade balances in context given Canada’s smaller economy.
Trump later posted an A.I.-generated image of himself holding a Canadian flag with the caption, “Oh, Canada!” Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc called the comment a joke, reflecting positive ties as Trump prepares for his second term.
