Trump Rally Shooting Victim Speaks Out from Hospital

James Copenhaver, one of the individuals injured in the recent assassination attempt on President Donald Trump, released his first public statement from the hospital on Thursday. The 74-year-old expressed his gratitude for the care he has received and confirmed he has spoken with Trump since the attack.

The violent incident at the rally resulted in Trump being wounded in his right ear, while Copenhaver and 57-year-old David Dutch sustained more severe injuries. The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthews Crooks, and another attendee, Corey Comperatore, were killed. Dutch is currently in stable condition, and Copenhaver’s condition has improved from “critical” to “serious.”

“We continue to offer our thoughts and prayers for the full and speedy recovery of Mr. David Dutch and for the full recovery of President Donald Trump,” Copenhaver said in a statement provided to Fox News. He praised the caregivers who have been instrumental in his recovery and expressed a desire to return to his hobby of riding his Harley Davidson with his friend Randy, who was with him at the rally and provided immediate aid after he was shot.

Copenhaver also paid tribute to Corey Comperatore, who was killed while protecting his family. A memorial service for Comperatore took place on Thursday.

“Jim would like to especially thank the first responders, medics, and hospital staff who have provided him with initial and continuing care,” his family said. “Additionally, Jim would like to express his thoughts and prayers for the other victims, their families, and President Trump. He prays for a safe and speedy recovery for them all.”

The statement also noted that Trump called Copenhaver on Thursday, after initially missing him due to Copenhaver being asleep. “They were shocked by just how humble he was,” said Joseph Feldman, a spokesperson for the Copenhaver family.

Authorities have yet to disclose the motive behind the shooting, though they have identified the assailant as Thomas Matthews Crooks, 20. As investigations proceed, the focus remains on the recovery and support of those impacted by this traumatic event.
