Two Men Caught Attempting To Shoot Contraband Into Louisiana Prison

Authorities in Louisiana arrested two men attempting to fire packages of drugs and tobacco into a federal prison using a high-powered air cannon.

Jose Francisco Herrera Munoz, 18, and Angel Gonzales Gutierrez, 19, were apprehended outside the Federal Correctional Complex in Pollock before they could launch their packages over the prison fence. Deputies from the Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office discovered $112,000 worth of tobacco and $89,500 in methamphetamine in their possession.

The device the men planned to use was an air-powered cannon, similar to those seen at sporting events to launch promotional items. This type of cannon can propel objects more than 350 feet, easily clearing security fences.

Sheriff’s deputies had been investigating the plot and moved in before the contraband could be launched. Officers arrested the suspects and seized the cannon along with the illegal materials.

Both men face charges of attempting to introduce contraband into a penal institution and attempting to distribute methamphetamine. Additionally, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a detainer on Munoz, as he is in the country illegally and is set to be transferred to ICE custody upon release.

Following the arrests, the prison, which houses 870 inmates, suspended all visitations indefinitely.
