Two Men Shot Outside Of GOP Gubernatorial Candidate’s Home

Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY), who is currently running for governor of New York, revealed in a tweet that there had been a shooting outside of his Long Island home on Sunday.

Two men were reportedly shot during the incident, which occurred at around 2:18 p.m. near Zeldin’s home in Shirley, New York.

The Republican congressman stated in his tweet that he and his family were safe, but noted that a bullet had “landed just 30 feet” from his children.

“Thank you to all who reached out with your concern regarding the 2 people shot this afternoon outside my home,” Zeldin tweeted. “Mikayla and Arianna were at the kitchen table doing homework. One of the bullets landed just 30 feet from them. They acted very swiftly and smartly in response.”

The New York Post noted in a report that the shooting is being investigated as a gang-related crime.

The incident had taken place a few houses down from Zeldin’s home, and sources have said that it had “nothing to do with” the congressman, who has made his tough-on-crime position a key component of his campaign.

“Just happens to be irony,” one source told the New York Post.

Zeldin released a statement regarding the incident, writing: “Crime is out of control. Like so many New Yorkers, crime literally made its way to our front doorstep.”

“My 16 year old daughters, Mikayla and Arianna, were at our house doing homework, while my wife, Diana, and I were in the car, having just departed the Bronx Columbus Day Parade in Morris Park,” the statement continued. “After my daughters heard the gunshots and the screaming, they ran upstairs, locked themselves in the bathroom, and immediately called 911. They acted very swiftly and smartly every step of the way and Diana and I are extremely proud of them.”

“The two individuals who were shot were laying down under my front porch and the bushes in front of our porch. My understanding is that they have been transported to area hospitals. I do not know their identities,” Zeldin added.

The Republican gubernatorial candidate’s opponent, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D), also sent out a tweet about the shooting.

“I’ve been briefed on the shooting outside of Congressman Zeldin’s home,” she wrote. “As we await more details, I’m relieved to hear the Zeldin family is safe and grateful for law enforcement’s quick response.”

According to the Suffolk County Police Department, detectives have confirmed that the two individuals who were shot are receiving “treatment of their injuries.”

This is not the first time that the Republican congressman has experienced the consequences of the high crime in his state. During a July campaign event, Zeldin was attacked on stage by a man with a weapon.
