Joseph De Soto, a newly elected state representative in West Virginia, was arrested Thursday for allegedly threatening the lives of five Republican colleagues. The shocking incident has led to questions over the future of his seat and his last-minute switch from Republican to Democrat just before the arrest.
De Soto, 61, was elected in November to represent Berkeley County in the state’s House of Delegates. According to reports, he became enraged during a caucus meeting after learning of a vote to remove him from office for undisclosed reasons. Police say De Soto directed his threats at House Speaker Roger Hanshaw and Reps. Bill Ridenour, Pat McGeehan, Michael Hite, and Chuck Horst.

Law enforcement documents indicate that De Soto claimed divine inspiration for his actions, stating that God had instructed him to kill the representatives. He also reportedly sent threatening messages earlier in the week. In addition to the criminal charges, De Soto is under investigation for allegedly falsifying information about his military service and personal background during his campaign.
Currently held on a $300,000 cash bond at Eastern Regional Jail, De Soto’s party affiliation change the day before his arrest has added a political dimension to the controversy. Political analysts suggest the switch could lead to a legal battle over whether the seat should remain with the GOP or shift to Democratic control.

West Virginia Democratic Party Chair Mike Pushkin denounced the alleged threats, stating, “Violence and intimidation have no place in our government or our democracy.” West Virginia GOP Chairman Matt Herridge also condemned De Soto’s actions, voicing support for efforts to remove him from office.
The arrest has ignited debates about safety and accountability in state politics, with lawmakers and voters alike watching closely as investigations into De Soto’s behavior continue.
