Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt cautioned that Wisconsin is headed for disaster if Vice President Kamala Harris defeats President Donald Trump in the upcoming election. During his testimony at a House Judiciary Committee hearing in Milwaukee, Schmidt described how the worsening border crisis has led to a surge in crime and strained law enforcement resources throughout the state.
As the president of the Badger State Sheriffs Association, Schmidt relayed the concerns of his fellow sheriffs, stating, “If Trump doesn’t win this election, we are screwed.” He added that another sheriff emphasized that people don’t realize the extent of the crisis, which has been impacting communities in Wisconsin.

Schmidt detailed his own county’s struggles, explaining how Mexican cartels are increasingly active in drug trafficking in Dodge County. “I’m fearful for my family and the families of my deputies,” he said, highlighting the dangers and violence that come with cartel activity. He noted that the influx of drugs, particularly fentanyl, has contributed to significant fatalities, with 1,500 fentanyl deaths reported in the state each year.
He also pointed out that law enforcement officers often pull over individuals who have no valid identification or driver’s licenses, complicating their ability to enforce the law effectively. Schmidt stressed that a secure southern border is critical, saying, “We need federal action to protect communities like Dodge County and beyond.”
During the hearing, Schmidt thanked Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) for his attendance and support but criticized Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) for her absence, questioning her commitment to addressing the border crisis that is affecting Wisconsin.

Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney also testified, detailing the drug trafficking issues his county faces due to its location along major highways. “We’re seeing more drugs than ever before, and it’s becoming a serious problem,” Toney said. He added that the influx of illegal immigrants has put additional strain on the county’s jails, pushing local authorities to consider expanding their facilities.
As Republicans, including President Trump and Senate candidate Eric Hovde, campaign heavily on border security, they emphasize the need for immediate federal action to protect communities in Wisconsin from the impact of the ongoing crisis.
