Leftist Spin On Border Crisis Has Changed

Major media outlets that overwhelmingly denied the existence of a border crisis now seem to be altering their outlook. The very term “border crisis” had been under a soft ban by leftist news outlets from the start of President Biden’s term. Now the problem is being acknowledged — but it’s framed as being Donald Trump’s fault.

The Associated Press (AP) in its blog issued this guidance in 2021: “The current event in the news—a sharp increase in the arrival of unaccompanied minors … does not fit the classic dictionary definition of a crisis … we should avoid, or at the least, be highly cautious, about referring to the present situation as a crisis.”

One type of spin was denying or downplaying the problem entirely. The Guardian in 2021 referred to “four years of racist, chaotic, anti-immigration policies by the Trump administration.” The Washington Post at the about same time called the surge of illegals a “usual seasonal bump.” The always-leftist Atlantic stated that the number of immigrants was not the problem but “the treatment of those migrants in detention facilities.”

The other absurd spin on the issue was the conflation of immigration with “climate change.” Politico had a 2021 article which was titled: “It’s Not a Border Crisis. It’s a Climate Crisis.”

The shift in editorial policy seemed to coincide with two events. One was a big city mayor who became overwhelmed with the surge of illegals, that being Democrat Eric Adams of New York City. Even the New York Times printed his declaration that the surge would “destroy New York City.”

The second was the Biden vs. Gov. Abbott showdown in the Texas border city of Eagle Pass, which was too significant to ignore completely.

The New York Times printed an article in September 2023 called: “GOP Gets the Democratic Border Crisis It Wanted.” Time magazine in January 2024 framed the issue as “Trump’s urging of Republicans to refuse to help the Biden administration.”

The problem now exists, says the left, but it’s being framed as being the GOP’s fault and it’s Trump’s fault.

Both spins on the immigration issue do have a common thread — that is racism.

The moral compass of the leftist/globalist worldview seems to be based on race. The majority of illegals are people from countries such as Mexico, Venezuela, and China. Any opposition to mass immigration therefore becomes “racism.”
