Marines Still Missing After Helicopter Is Located In California

Wednesday morning, a missing United States military helicopter was located about 45 miles east of San Diego, California, near Pine Valley. Five Marines from the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361 have unfortunately not been located.

The Marines were flying from Creech Air Force Base to Las Vegas, Nevada. They were training before traveling home after departing the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. When they did not arrive on time at the station, military officials became suspicious and immediately investigated.

The Marines were flying a Super Stallion Helicopter CH-53. The aircraft is the largest helicopter used by the military. Its nickname is the “Hurricane Maker” because it’s designed to withstand severe weather conditions such as high winds, heavy rainfall, and snow. The helicopter was first spotted in Pine Valley near the Cleveland National Forest.

The national forest spans over 700 square miles and has minimal trails and population. In addition to the largely desolate mountain terrain, a record-breaking storm swept through the mountains Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service reported 10 inches of snow in the Cuyamaca mountains and strong winds. A tornado warning was also issued; however, winds did not escalate enough to initiate one.

Rescuers experienced a challenging time reaching the helicopter due to the severe weather and the dense forest. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection called in backup from the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Border Patrol, San Diego Sheriff’s Department, and the state Civil Air Patrol. The search was a coordinated effort on foot and authorities also used drones, surveillance technology, and 4×4 vehicles.

After a long and tumultuous search overnight, the helicopter was located. The search for the five Marines continues. According to NBC San Diego, agencies are scouting along Interstate 8 and Kitchen Creek Road for the missing Marines.

NPR reported that White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said President Joe Biden has been briefed on the missing Marines but made no further comment. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said, “We’re watching this closely, and again our thoughts are for the best.”
